Janet Jackson parts ways with Island Def JamNEW YORK (Billboard) - After just 14 months on Island Def Jam, Janet Jackson announced Monday (September 22) her departure from the label. According to Jackson's publicist, the label agreed to dissolve its relationship with the artist at her request. After a long stint with Virgin, Jackson inked a deal with Island in July 2007 and released her label debut, "Discipline," in February. When album sales failed to meet expectations, the singer expressed dissatisfaction with Island Def Jam, first telling SOHH.com that the label "stopped all promotion whatsoever on the album" after releasing the first single, "Feedback."
Sony Ericsson to roll out music service in weeks
COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Sony Ericsson will launch a mobile phone service with unlimited music downloads within weeks, the company said on Tuesday, as it competes with Nokia in expanding business beyond the sale of handsets. Sony Ericsson's Play Now Plus, which will be available solely through telecoms operators, will provide subscribers access to millions of songs, and users can keep up to 300 songs after their 6-18 month contracts end.

NEW YORK (Billboard) - The lineup has been unveiled for the 2008 Bridge School Benefit concert, with school co-founder Neil Young anchoring a bill that features Wilco, Jack Johnson, Cat Power, Sarah McLachlan and Death Cab For Cutie. Day one of the October 25-26 event at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, boasts performances from those artists plus Norah Jones. ZZ Top performs only on day one, while Smashing Pumpkins and Josh Groban perform only on day two.
Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde a rockabilly rebel

But her label does not want "Break Up the Concrete" (Shangri-La Music; October 7) to be described as a country effort because of negative connotations. Call it rockabilly, invoke comparisons with Bo Diddley or Sun Records, and luxuriate in the pedal steel guitar. Just don't say that she has gone Nashville.

The Zimmers, whose lead singer is 91, has just celebrated the launch of its 14-song debut album "Lust for Life" in a Berlin shopping center, a rock show that made the front page of many German newspapers at the weekend.
Miley Cyrus says committed to "Hannah Montana"
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Miley Cyrus and Disney Channel sought to shoot down rumors on Monday that the teen sensation of the TV hit "Hannah Montana" was seeking to part ways with the show that made her a star. Patti McTeague, a Disney spokeswoman for the "Hannah Montana" show, told Reuters that reports of on-set turmoil were "absolutely not true, pure gossip."
Beck brings it all back home in wide-ranging show

A decade and half after gaining notice with that breakthrough hit, he has the clout to handpick openers Spoon and MGMT and to share the stage with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Strings, conducted by his father, David Campbell. Although he's touring to support the recently released DGC album "Modern Guilt," Beck treated the capacity crowd to a career overview, drawing on highlights from his diverse oeuvre, with the second half of the set specifically designed to take advantage of the evening's orchestral support.
Renee Fleming takes on three roles for opera gala

Leading R&B drummer Earl Palmer dead at 84
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Leading R&B drummer Earl Palmer, best known for his New Orleans recording sessions with the likes of Fats Domino and Little Richard, died on Friday at his home in Los Angeles at age 84, his family said. Palmer, who died after a lengthy illness, played on hundreds of hits during a career that ran from the 1940s through the 1970s and earned him an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
